Indulgence Evaluation

I started to look at different aspects of indulgence and different ideas that is could create. I wanted to do something very creative and vibrant as it was my last piece. I liked the idea of doing indulgence as it could be completely different to different people. At first I focused on self indulgence, such as cupcakes and alcohol, which i liked as i was able to create some very colorful and vibrant pieces of work. Throughout my work though i changed the idea of indulgence to colour and then overindulging leading to the 7 deadly sins.

I tried to focus on colour throughout my project as that was a vital part since the start of the project. Most of my earlier sketches had a very 1950's feel to them, which I tried to convey  in my sketchbook and in my final piece. I chose to keep things as simple as possible throughout my project in order to keep on track and know what I wanted to do for my final piece. Most of my project flowed into each aspect instead of jumping all over the place, which was important to me as I wanted my sketchbook to have some sort of rhythm.

I looked at a variety of objects and people in order to get an idea of what I wanted my final piece to look like and  to make it my own piece which would be very original. I wanted my artwork to be as colourful as possible which then resulted in my work looking more abstract. I liked doing this as it would be completely different to everything else I had done. I wanted to look at pop art work and then change it and to get my own photos and change it so it could be original.

I looked at the obvious pop artist such as Roy Lietchenburg and Andy Warhol, but i didn't want to look to deep into their work as i might start copying their style, instead of creating my own. I took different aspects of both of these artists such as the print work and the style of women to help me in my work. I also looked at other artist and style of art to get the colour aspect in my piece right. Lorna Mercado and Japanese art both used colour effectively which is why i wanted to look at them, and at that time in the course i was looking at nature and indulgence in colour. I needed to look at all of these artists and gather as much influence to make my project better without copying their style.

I kept to the same media as I normally do as I was comfortable with acrylic and ink. Instead of experimenting with different media i experimented with how to use the media and different ways of using acrylic and ink. I wished to use these mediums as well because i would be able to create some very bold and vibrant colours that i probably wouldn't with any other media. I found working with acrylic to be a good move as i knew what I was doing and as an artist it made me understand that I could create different textures and movement with acrylic.

I came to my final piece by looking at all of my 7 deadly sins components and i wanted to mix them up so i decided to create a collage where they somehow all interlinked with each other. I wanted to use the colour associated with the sins for the people, such as gluttony was orange so i created a orange waitress. I still kept the whole idea as a 1950's style so it would be original as i would  be able to make it bright and bold and use Warhol and Lietchnburg as influence and not be representing their work. I used acrylic and ink to mix the background and a

ll the elements together. I wanted the 7 deadly sins words to be represented on each sin, such as lust has a convertible with the plate "LUST" and Sloth has the words Sloth on her garters. I thought this would be a great way to make it original and to still incorporate the 7 deadly sins to make it more ironic and possibly amusing.

My work has progressed by looking and self indulgence to then colour indulgence and back to overindulging. I am happy with my work and that everything links together smoothly. My determination to keep it colourful made me end have the idea for the 7 deadly sins. I think that there are some aspects in my work that reflects my abilities to the best that they could be and for those pieces I am proud of my work. I have used every element in my sketchbook to be seen in my final piece, such as the use of colour self indulgence and then over indulgence.  I think if i were to do this again i would like to create 7 final pieces so that i could focus more on the sins than i have originally.
